Grilled snails 🐌 Catalan style

It had been raining β˜”οΈ for days and a lot of snails 🐌 were out and about. The artist πŸ‘¨β€πŸŽ€ of our village, Valenciano, who one day showed me his beautiful paintings and some cages in his garage, was very busy fetching the biggest snails on the little path running from our home to the olive tree 🌳

In the cages he keeps the snails. Snails are quite popular in Catalonia. You either fast the snails for a couple of days or you feed them maize 🌾 flour. This is so they are cleansed of any foods they have been eating.

Another way is to put salt πŸ§‚ on them and let them foam for a while.

Either way, wash them in water well. Then let them soak for Β½ hour.

Then prepare a lovely flavoured stock from wine, onions, garlic, parsley, thyme etcetera and let the snails simmer for 2 hours. Then drain.

Now the Caracoles 🐌 are ready to be grilled.

Place the snails in their homes with the opening up. Grill them over charcoal. Each snail forms its own cooking pot.

TIP Our neighbour boiled the snails in milk πŸ₯› and cognac before grilling

Be very careful in picking and consuming land snails as only certain snails are edible after above cooking process
